Colla Voce – about the author

“A.K. sings with the conviction of one who understands Grace as both abstraction and fact of life.”

“As singer A.K., a classically trained vocalist, hit her first note, a breeze — an honest-to-god-no-this-is-not-hyperbole stray breeze — rustled through the audience. Did someone leave a window open? Perhaps. Divine acknowledgment of a righteous performance? That, too.”
The Boston Phoenix

“A.K.’s voice shimmers with raw power, something that carries through the entire set of songs.”

Alexandra K. is a native of Los Angeles, CA who now resides in New York. She holds a Bachelor of Music in Voice Performance from Boston University and is also an accomplished pianist. She is a singer, promoter and organizer in the small yet growing folk revival in Boston and the Northeast and the Allston Hootenannys along with Vikesh Kapoor, Spitzer Space Telescope, Barna Howard and Lonesome Vince. Together, as part of the Mama Bird Recording Co., they put on two large-scale folk music showcases featuring their own music as well as that of young musicians from surrounding areas. The MBRCo. also threw countless community music Hootenannys at The Barn in Allston, MA and the Democracy Center in Cambridge, MA.

She has been involved in Folk music, Punk music, Rock bands, Operas, Choirs and Jazz Ensembles since the tender age of 11 and most recently released an EP with the band Old Hannah entitled “Bright World.” Her far-reaching taste in music brought her to New York to hone her own voice as well as to experience music from all over the world. Her position as both a popular and classical musician make her uniquely suited to music criticism and her wildly varying taste brings her to many different kinds of performances all over the world. She twice performed in the Edinburgh Fringe festival and has studied at the Bel Canto Institute in Florence, Italy. Alexandra currently studies classical voice with Maria Spacagna and has also worked with Youngok Shin and Sarah Arneson. She has participated in Master Classes with Amy Burton, Martin Katz, Simon Estes and Phyllis Curtin.
